One of my favorite films is Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1989 animated epic AKIRA. I still remember the clerk at the video store recommending it to me when I was a young teen, bringing it home and falling almost instantly in love. It’s not a perfect film but it was the first “adult” animated film I had ever seen and it blew my mind. (My very next trip to the video store was to rent PROJECT A-KO, VAMPIRE HUNTER D and APPLESEED.)
I was insanely jealous to wake up this morning to see that last night’s Mondo Mystery Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin was a print of AKIRA and everyone in attendance got a copy of Tyler Stout’s beautiful new quad for the film. I’m usually not a huge fan of Stout’s hyper-stylized art but it works so well with the world of AKIRA, I wish I had one of these immediately (and I almost never buy posters to hang on my wall). Sadly they won’t be going on sale to the general public (unless you feel like giving unscrupulous eBay sellers $999.99 for their copy) and you’ll have to be satisfied with an online copy.
