Just a day ago, we got a new look at HBO's Lovecraft Country, Cthulu and all (check that trailer out below), and today Comic-Con @ Home had an incisive interview with the main cast of the show: Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, Michael Kenneth Williams, Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, Abbey Lee, and Courtney B. Vance.
In addition to the interview, we get a new scene from the show, which shows three characters going into a very unsavory place in search of some answers.
Here are some highlights from the chat, which you can see in full below:
– Courtney B. Vance and Aunjanue Ellis reminisce about a love scene they are a part of. They call it "grown black love."
– A good amount of time is given over to the cast giving us the pilot episode's plot details, so folks who want to go in cold might want to skip over some of this chat.
– Michael K. Williams reveals he was a huge fan of The Twilight Zone and feels as though Lovecraft Country has some of its DNA in it.
– Jonathan Majors was impressed with the character when first reading the script and couldn't believe he was written as a black man. He describes the character as a "Lovecraftian bibliophile."
– Abbey Lee plays the daughter of a leader of a secret order of alchemists; she calls her "the agent of chaos." She's a "Karen-type", but she's not just a violent and manipulative character, she has a lot of challenge and conflict in her because she herself was oppressed.
– Jurnee Smollett says there are many themes in the show that resonate with the cast in this moment, specifically the way it deals with systemic racism.
– The cast speaks often about how they felt like a family on set; they gave each other strength during what are some difficult themes.
– Several members of the cast relate difficult tales of their own experiences with racism.
Watch the entire interview – and a scene from the show – in the video below!
Lovecraft Country premieres on August 16th on HBO.
