The three seasons of the Audience Network television series Mr. Mercedes were each based on a novel in Stephen King's "Bill Hodges trilogy"; Mr. Mercedes, End of Watch, and Finders Keepers (in order of adaptation – the second season was an adaptation of the third book). Unfortunately, Audience Network ceased operations soon after the third season of Mr. Mercedes aired, becoming a preview channel for the HBO Max streaming service. Mr. Mercedes had been left without a home. Until now.
The NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock has acquired the rights to Mr. Mercedes. The first two seasons of the show will be available to watch on Peacock as of Thursday, October 15th, with season 3 following on a date that has yet to be determined.
There's no word on whether or not this acquisition could lead to the show getting a fourth season. If it does, the writers will have to come up with something original for Bill Hodges to do, since they have run out of source material.
Developed for television by David E. Kelly, Mr. Mercedes stars Brendan Gleeson as Bill Hodges,
a retired detective who is tormented by a serial killer (Brady Hartsfield, aka Mr. Mercedes) through a series of letters and e-mails, causing him to set out on a dangerous and potentially felonious crusade to protect his loved ones and himself.
Gleeson's co-stars include Harry Treadaway, Justine Lupe, Jharrel Jerome, Holland Taylor, Breeda Wool, Kelly Lynch, Mary-Louise Parker, Scott Lawrence, Ann Cusack, Jack Huston, Tessa Ferrer, Maximiliano Hernandez, and Nancy Travis. Gleeson and the supporting cast all do great work on this show.
King executive produced the series with Kelley, Dennis Lehane, and Jack Bender.
I really liked the first season of Mr. Mercedes. I wasn't so keen on the second season, but I was also disappointed by the book that season was based on. I haven't had a chance to watch the third season yet.
