This is a bit of news I didn't see coming: Channing Tatum has signed on to star in a Universal monster movie that's being produced by his 21 JUMP STREET (watch it HERE) and 22 JUMP STREET (watch that HERE) directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Very little is known about this project, but Wes Tooke has written the screenplay (based on an idea by Reid Carolin) and it's said to be
"a modern day, tongue in cheek thriller" that is inspired by Universal's classic monster features.
Lord and Miller will be producing alongside Aditya Sood for their company Lord Miller, while Tatum, Carolin, and Peter Kiernan produce through their company Free Association. Jay Polidoro and Lexi Barta will be overseeing the project for Universal, Will Allegra will oversee for Lord Miller, and Michael Parets is Free Association's overseer.
The "Dark Universe" plans may have been scrapped, but Universal Pictures remains dedicated to bringing their classic monsters and maniacs back to the screen. In addition to this currently untitled project, they also have Leigh Whannell's THE WOLFMAN, Elizabeth Banks' THE INVISIBLE WOMAN, Paul Feig's DARK ARMY, Dexter Fletcher's RENFIELD, a James Wan-produced FRANKENSTEIN, a David Koepp-scripted BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, Josh Cooley's animated movie LITTLE MONSTERS, and Matt Stawski's musical MONSTER MASH in the works. We're waiting to see if Blumhouse and Karyn Kusama's DRACULA ends up being a Universal release as well.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Universal Monsters back in action, and I'm interested to see what this Tatum / Lord and Miller project is going to be like.
