Juju: Issa Rae producing, Thembi Banks directing Universal horror comedy

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Director Thembi Banks recently helmed an episode of the HBO comedy series Insecure, and now she's set to continue her working relationship with that show's star and co-creator Issa Rae on a horror comedy titled Juju. Set up at Universal Pictures, Juju will mark Banks' studio feature directorial debut.

Rae will be executive producing Juju with La La Anthony while Deniese Davis produces for her company HooRae. Sara Rastogi will be overseeing the project for HooRae, while Erik Baiers overees for Universal.

Angelica Nwandu, founder of the Instagram-based media company The Shade Room, is writing the screenplay for the film… and that's where the information runs out. No plot details have been revealed.

So now we have to look at the word Juju to try to figure out what this movie might be about. According to Wikipedia,

Juju is a folk magic in West Africa, within juju a variety of concepts exist. Juju charms and spells can be used to inflict either bad or good juju, which equate to either bad or good luck.

In addition to her Insecure episode, Banks has directed multiple shorts and also worked as a writer and story editor on the shows SMILF and Home Before Dark.

Juju is in the early stages right now, but with the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated Issa Rae bringing it to the screen it's probably going to be getting a lot of attention.
