So this is…interesting. It seems that the new Space Jam 2: A New Legacy dropped and it…look, I'm not going to claim Space Jam was any sort of masterpiece or anything (it was a mercenary cash grab based on shoe commecials, after all), but this? I don't know. I know the criticism of "it's just Ready Player One but somehow worse" is not a new take by any stretch at this point, but…if the shoe fits…
Anyway, instead of focusing on the Looney Tunes, it seems the upcoming movie's universe will now encompass everything Warner Bros. owns, including DC Comics, Hanna-Barbara, and…fucking Pennywise the Clown from IT?!
And…A CLOCKWORK ORANGE???!!!!
Apparently so. Again, it's not that Space Jam was some sacred cow – and in some ways I'm impressed that it's being so bold in this way – though, on the other hand, I'm also disappointed about how it seems to be sidelining the Toons themselves.
Anyway, Space Jam 2: A New Legacy – directed by Malcolm D. Lee and starring LeBron James, Don Cheadle, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Bugs Bunny – will slam into theaters July 16th!
Here's the official synopsis:
When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.
