Naomi Watts to star in Goodnight Mommy remake for Amazon

Variety has reported that Naomi Watts has signed on to star in an English-language remake of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz's psychological thriller Goodnight Mommy for Amazon Studios.

Goodnight Mommy follows twin brothers who are sent to stay with their mother and are surprised to find her covered in bandages from the recent procedure. "As her behavior grows increasingly erratic and unusual, the twins become convinced she is an imposter," reads Variety's synopsis. "Their suspicion sets off a roller-coaster of emotional mind games and misunderstandings between mother and her children, that eventually explodes with irreparable and heartbreaking consequences." In addition to starring in the remake, Naomi Watts will also executive produce the project which will be directed by Matt Sobel based on a script by Kyle Warren. Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz are also onboard as executive producers. In a statement, Matt Sobel said:

My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey. In our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy, fear of abandonment — and the dreadful realization that those close to us may not be who they seem — create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center. I can’t wait to create this heart-stopping story with Amazon and the peerless Naomi Watts.

Beyond the basic premise, I'm not all that familiar with Goodnight Mommy, so I'll leave it up to you fine folks to decide whether the remake is warranted.
