Game of Thrones 10-year anniversary marked by new trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Determined to keep Game of Thrones a part of the pop culture zeitgeist while working on several spin-off series based on the fantasy sensation, HBO has released a new trailer for Season 8. You read that correctly. There's a new trailer for what is arguably the show's most divisive season. Why? Well, to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary, of course! Be aware, my friends, this trailer is dark and full of spoilers, so watch at your own peril.

Naturally, the new trailer features highlights from the final six episodes of the Emmy-winning series – some of which are loathed by fans who were disappointed with how George R.R. Martin's epic tale concluded. If you're looking to score a V.I.P. ticket to this year's Snarkapalooza, you should check out the comments on this trailer:

"Season 8 was like if Frodo realized he could snap the One Ring in half like a twig as soon as he reached Mordor."

"I can’t even bring myself to re-watch the entire show because of how badly it ended. This is a shame because the first four seasons are absolutely ace."

Alright, I think you get the idea. I don't want to create too much of a dogpile.

HBO, Game of Thrones, 10 year anniversary, trailer

During a time when fans are ready and willing to launch campaigns in the spirit of getting what they want out of studios, networks, and filmmakers, scores of GOT fans have called for HBO to remake the final season. However, unlike the Snyder Cut, HBO doesn't have files worth of spare GOT footage to create an alternate ending, let alone an entire season. Plus, whether people liked it or not, the final season was still a major hit for HBO. Add the fact that many of the show's stars have moved on to other projects, and you're looking at a sticky situation for reshoots.

Of course, there is a chance that HBO could film a new ending and release it as a standalone presentation sometime down the road. Maybe once Martin finishes the final two books, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, HBO can double-back and film a new ending with a new cast. While this scenario is unlikely, stranger things have happened.

Are you excited to see what else HBO has in store to expand the Game of Thrones Universe, or did the final seasons sour you on the franchise?
