When Godzilla: King of the Monsters under-performed, it was thought that perhaps Godzilla vs. Kong may have been the end of Legendary's MonsterVerse, but it turns out that audiences were desperate for some escapism as the film has become the biggest hit of the pandemic. It seems that Legendary is now keen to keep the franchise going as THR has reported that they're in early talks with Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard to return for the next MonsterVerse movie. It's still early days yet, but THR says that one possible title that's been making the rounds is Son of Kong.
Since its release a little less than a month ago, Godzilla vs. Kong has grossed over $400 million worldwide, which means that it's already surpassed the box-office take of the entire theatrical run of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. What makes it all the more impressive is that Godzilla vs. Kong has done this while the world is still in the midst of a pandemic and while the film is also streaming on HBO Max in the U.S., not to mention that it's yet to open in several larger markets around the world. Should the deal close, Adam Wingard would be the first MonsterVerse director to return for another installment, but he also has several other high-profile projects in the works, including the Face/Off sequel for Paramount and a ThunderCats movie for Warner Bros.
