It’s no secret that George Clooney has a disdain-hate relationship with his version of Batman, having starred as the Caped Crusader in 1997’s Batman & Robin. But there might be someone else who brushes off his take more than anybody else: his own son!
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, George Clooney recalled a moment when his son laid it out as only a kid can. “My son’s in love with Batman, right? He’s in love with Batman. That’s all he talks about is Batman. And I’m like, ‘You know I was Batman?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, not anymore.’ He has no idea how right he is!…How do you tell your six-year-old son that Batman had nipples? How do you do that?!” For what it’s worth, those nipples landed that get-up a starting bid of $40,000 on the auction block.
Clooney’s boy hints at a pretty good point here, even if he doesn’t know it: his old man was never anybody’s Batman. For many of us, our Batman was Michael Keaton – not Clooney or Kilmer. And for a younger generation, it went to Christian Bale. After that, it certainly wasn’t going to be Ben Affleck (especially for Clooney…), while Robert Pattinson is trying to vie for the hearts of depressed teens everywhere just getting their first taste of Nirvana. As for the one-offs in between Keaton and Bale, Clooney and Kilmer have always been pushed to the side, even if they do have niche fanbases out there. Sure, it wasn’t what we had come to want from the characters or stories – we were basically being bombarded with merchandise for the runtime – but it can be enjoyed today in a so-bad-it’s-good kind of way. Hey, some people even think it truly kicks ice!
Meanwhile, Clooney is well aware that Batman & Robin killed the franchise on the big screen until Christopher Nolan came along. However, he, despite his frequent Batman disses, did suck it up for his brief cameo in The Flash, which still might be the best part of the entire movie…
