Over the past two weeks, we’ve seen the release of three new Doctor Who specials celebrating the 60th anniversary of the franchise. We also saw the introduction of Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor, who will soon be returning for the Doctor Who Christmas Special.
Disney+ has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special, which is titled The Church on Ruby Road. “Long ago on Christmas Eve, a baby as abandoned in the snow,” reads the official synopsis. “Today, Ruby Sunday meets the Doctor, stolen babies, goblins and perhaps the secret to her birth.” Millie Gibson stars alongside Ncuti Gatwa as Ruby Sunday, the Doctor’s new companion. The special also stars Michelle Greenidge as Carla Sunday, Angela Wynter as Cherry Sunday, Anita Dobson as Mrs. Flood, and Davina McCall as herself.
“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion,” Millie Gibson said in a statement when she won the role. “It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.“
The three Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials — The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle — are now streaming on Disney+. This is the start of a brand-new era for the long-running sci-fi franchise. The BBC and Disney joined forces last year, with Disney+ set to become the exclusive home for all new seasons outside the UK and Ireland. This will help introduce Doctor Who to new generations of fans, plus, it comes with a greatly increased budget thanks to Disney’s deep pockets.
Will you be watching the new Doctor Who Christmas Special when it debuts on Disney+ on December 25th?
