Dave Filoni named Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, will help oversee development of future Star Wars projects

Since working alongside George Lucas on Star Wars: The Clone Wars close to twenty years ago, Dave Filoni has seen his star rise considerably at Lucasfilm. In a Vanity Fair feature, Dave Filoni says that he’s now the Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, which will allow him to oversee the development of future Star Wars projects.

“Now I’m what’s called chief creative officer of Lucasfilm,” Dave Filoni said. “In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.” The new position will see Filoni working more closely with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Head of Live-Action Development Carrie Beck. “In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on,” Filoni added. “When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.“

Filoni continued, “I’m not telling people what to do. But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost… To truly help filmmakers, it was really important for me to experience it firsthand. I can also lend a perspective on the challenges that telling these stories will present. I feel more capable of actually being helpful outside of just saying, ‘Well, Jedi are like this, and Sith are like this…’”

In addition to lending his expertise to future Star Wars storytellers at Lucasfilm, Dave Filoni will continue development on his own Star Wars movie, which is expected to tie together several of the Disney+ shows. “I’m setting up what seems to be a larger conflict with the Imperial remnant,” Filoni said. “That conflict can’t just mirror what we’ve seen before. It has to take on a different shape. It can’t just be the Empire versus what looks like the Rebellion, or even the Republic. It has to be visually different.” As far as the second season of Ahsoka goes, nothing has been officially announced, but Filoni does have an outline of what’s to come.
