Zack Snyder developing Rebel Moon animated series set before the movies

Zack Snyder is developing a Rebel Moon animated series set before the events of the upcoming Netflix movies.

Rebel Moon will be Zack Snyder’s very own space fantasy epic, but the franchise is even bigger than we had imagined. The director told Total Film that not only will the Rebel Moon series consist of the two Netflix movies, but also an animated series, an animated comic, and a narrative podcast.

I’m the gatekeeper for what’s possible. I’m the only one who knows where the whole story is going, and I do have it mapped all the way,” Snyder said. “We’re doing a narrative podcast, and an animated comic book, and an animated series. They all take place before the events of the movie. So you can start to understand the vastness of the mythology that we’ve been working on.

In fact, the mythology is so dense that Snyder already has a timeline spanning 800 years. Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad explained: “The world is very, very detailed and fleshed out. There’s hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents of methodology and mythology and lore. The timeline goes back 800 years, from our movies.” The Rebel Moon writers’ room contains a 12ft whiteboard with the timeline laid out, and Johnstad added that the two movies “are literally two or three inches of that entire 12-foot span.

As Snyder said, the Rebel Moon animated series will take place before the events of the movies. So we’ll have to wait to see if the movies give us a hint as to what story the animated series will tell.

Here’s the official logline for Rebel Moon: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire will be released on Netflix on December 22nd, followed by Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver on April 19, 2024.
