We were already excited for Joker: Folie à Deux but now the movie’s cinematographer is promising that it will offer plenty of surprises for fans when it comes out next October.
Speaking with Definition Magazine, cinematographer Lawrence Sher – who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the first Joker (one of that year’s record 11) – praised director Todd Phillips and the ambitions he has brought to Joker: Folie à Deux. “Something I appreciate about Todd Phillips — who I’ve done seven movies with, including Joker — is that he’s always taking risks. We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”
From what we know about Joker: Folie à Deux so far, it definitely does sound like Phillips – who has been sharing photos here and there – and company are looking to make the sequel more dynamic than the original…and we don’t even know the plot! The most interesting draw may be that Phillips has opted to give the sequel musical flair, so here’s hoping we get a few fresh songs from Lady Gaga, who is playing Harley Quinn, Arthur Fleck’s main squeeze. That the movie is at the tail end of post-production (filming wrapped back in April) only adds more hype.
The first Joker would go on to gross over $1 billion worldwide, becoming the first – and so far only – R-rated movie to do so. And while we don’t know if Joker: Folie à Deux will be able to replicate that, we’re betting that it will still pull in big numbers at the box office. Far less likely is Joaquin Phoenix repeating a Best Actor win, although we could see Lady Gaga earning her second acting nomination (after her Best Actress nod for A Star Is Born). How do you think Joker: Folie à Deux will compare to the original? Do you think it will have a good showing at the Oscars?
Joker: Folie à Deux hits theaters on October 4th, 2024.
