The post-apocalyptic sci-fi action film The Creator, the latest from Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards, is set to reach theatres on September 29th, but an early screening was held recently – and the first reactions to the film indicate Edwards has made this one worth the seven year wait since the release of Rogue One. Viewers who had the chance to see The Creator are using descriptions like “masterful”, “masterpiece”, “visually stunning”, “profound”, “mesmerizing”, and “breathtaking”. Of course, as with every movie, there were some viewers who weren’t as satisfied as others:

But The Creator does sound quite promising overall. Here’s the official synopsis for the film: Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney (Juno) star.

Coming our way from 20th Century Studios/New Regency, The Creator was written by Edwards and Chris Weitz, who also worked on the script for Rogue One. Edwards produced the film alongside Kiri Hart, Arnon Milchan, and Jim Spencer. Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Natalie Lehmann, Nick Meyer, and Zev Foreman serve as executive producers.
