JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Flora and Son – the latest music-themed film from director John Carney (Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street) – at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the result was a 9/10 review you can read at THIS LINK. A wider audience will get their chance to see Flora and Son when it reaches Apple TV+ on September 29th, and with that date just a month away a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) and Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters), who happens to be the daughter of Bono from U2, Flora and Son was also scripted by Carney and centers on single mom Flora (Hewson), who is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max. Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up L.A. musician, Jeff (Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.
Max is played by Orén Kinlan (Sunlight). Jack Reynor (The Peripheral) is also in the cast, along with Amy Huberman (Threesome), Keith McErlean (Kin), Aislín McGuckin (Outlander), Margarita Murphy (One Night in Dublin), Marcella Plunkett (The Bachelor Weekend), Paul Reid (The Ritual), Kelly Thornton (Life’s a Breeze), Sophie Vavasseur (Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack), and Don Wycherley (I Kill Giants).
Carney produced the film with Anthony Bregman, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole. Alison Cohen, Cathleen Dore, and Milan Popelka serve as executive producers.
Bumbray said, “One really has to give Carney a lot of credit, as he typically stays in one genre (the music-driven romance/comedy), but he does so brilliantly. Nobody makes movies like he does, and each of his films feel like a gift. Flora and Son is no exception.“
I haven’t gotten around to watch Begin Again yet, but I really enjoyed Once and Sing Street, so I’m definitely interested in watching both Begin Again and Flora and Son.
