Deadpool 3: Emma Corrin excited to play the villain but needed a Marvel debrief to understand the “absolute mind-f***”

Emma Corrin is excited to play the villain in Deadpool 3, but needed a Marvel debrief to understand the “absolute mind-f***” of a movie.

Emma Corrin, Deadpool 3

Emma Corrin is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Deadpool 3. Exactly who they will be playing in the sequel is being kept under wraps, but it’s expected that Corrin is playing the villain, something they’re never done before.

I feel really excited to play a villain,” Emma Corrin told Empire before the SAG strike. She was speaking to them promoting her new series A Murder at the End of the World, and hasn’t actually begun shooting the now-shut down (for the duration of the strike) movie. “I haven’t done that, and it’s an itch I want to scratch.” When you’re dealing with Marvel, you get used to absolute secrecy from day one, and Corrin recalled that they didn’t even know why they had been called to meet with Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy. “I’d heard about the project but, classic Marvel, they couldn’t tell me anything about it. Absolutely nothing. Zilch,” Corrin said. “So I met him being like, ‘I don’t know what this is about.’

The MCU has well over a decade’s worth of story-telling under its belt and Emma Corrin naturally needed a bit of a Marvel debrief before starting work on Deadpool 3. “Hands up, I’m not a Marvel person,” Corrin said. “I’ve watched Spider-Man and Black Panther. I was like, ‘Look, you’re gonna have to debrief me into this.’ It’s such an intricate world. There’s so much to it, it’s an absolute mind-f**k. All the language and the Easter eggs, and this person is related to that person who did this, and this person came back and this person’s dead… it’s amazing.” Digesting that amount of Marvel mythology in one go is no small task, and when combined with Deadpool’s self-awareness, I can understand why Corrin thought it was a bit of a mind-f**k.

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Emma Corrin, the upcoming Deadpool sequel will see the return of Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Rob Delaney as Peter. Deadpool 3 will also star Matthew Macfadyen in an undisclosed role. Production on Deadpool 3 has been halted due to the SAG strike and won’t resume until a deal is reached.

The biggest addition to the Deadpool 3 cast is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, who finally broke down after being pestered by Ryan Reynolds for so many years. Reynolds said that the sequel will present a new challenge for Jackman. “I think [Jackman] was excited and what we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind,” Reynolds said, “that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.” Clearly, all that pestering paid off. “I mean, I never stopped,” Reynolds said. “I was just pestering him like a gnat over the last many years. I actually just think… I believe in timing … and I think he was ready.

Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
