Superman & Lois renewed at CW; Gotham Knights cancelled

Superman & Lois will be returning to The CW for an abbreviated fourth season, while newcomer Gotham Knights has been cancelled.

In a surprising move, CW has opted to bring back fan favourite series Superman & Lois for a slightly abbreviated fourth season. The network has been cancelling shows left and right, with them also pulling the plug on the Batman-universe-themed series Gotham Knights after only one season. This makes Superman & Lois the last remaining DC series on the network, with The Flash having recently aired its series finale.

According to Deadline, the renewal comes with a few caveats. For one, the budget has been slashed, meaning only ten episodes will be produced as opposed to the standard thirteen. The supporting cast is also expected to be reduced, perhaps moving some regulars down to recurring status or eliminating roles completely.

The CW has been open about the fact that they’re moving away from originals, with the fall schedule set to be dominated by unscripted series and Canadian acquisitions. The network recently cancelled their much-hyped Supernatural spin-off, The Winchesters, and Walker: Independence. The sports drama, All American: Homecoming has also been picked up for another season, alongside its mothership series All American and the network’s breakout reimagining of Walker: Texas Ranger Walker.

Superman & Lois premiered on The CW in 2019 and stars Tyler Hoechlin as The Man of Steel and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. The series follows the couple as they balance raising their two sons, Jonathan and Jordan, while saving the world. The show has been acclaimed by superhero fans as a solid mix of fantasy and domestic drama and has maintained a strong following. It’s the last remaining Arrowverse series airing, with the franchise winding down in the wake of DC’s creative shift under James Gunn and Peter Safran.
