Douglas Tait has a long list of acting and stunt credits to his name, and among those many credits are a couple of horror icons. Tait was the man behind the mask when Jason Voorhees rises from the water clutching Freddy’s severed head at the end of Freddy vs. Jason, and eighteen years later he was also did some stunt work as Michael Myers in Halloween Kills. Now Tait is making his feature directorial debut with the psychological thriller Angel Baby, and he has assembled a strong cast for the film. That includes Rebecca de Mornay (The Hand That Rocks the Cradle), Daniel Roebuck (The Munsters), Dan Thiel (Ratched), Whitney Anderson (The Lady Killers), Chris Browning (The Lincoln Lawyer), Tait himself, and his wife Isabel Cueva (Aztec Warrior). Quiver Distribution holds the North American sales rights and Variety reports that 101 Films Intl. has now acquired the international rights. They’re presenting the project to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market, and hopefully we’ll be hearing some distribution news very soon.
Tait is directing Angel Baby from a screenplay by Elisa Manzini (I’ll Be Waiting) and Rebecca Stahl (Everything in Between). The film will tell the following story: Val (Cueva), a loving wife, and her husband Justin (Thiel) move to a remote cabin to heal from the sudden death of their unborn twins and get a fresh start. Soon she senses an evil presence. After her best friend (Anderson) comes to check on her mental health, dark secrets begin to unravel. Meanwhile, a mysterious neighbor (Browning) comes searching for the truth and with the help of the owner of the local bar (DeMornay) she gains the strength she needs to face what is tormenting her peace.
Tait and Cueva are producing Angel Baby for Cave Entertainment. Fearful Pictures is providing the financing.
101 Films’ Michael Walker told Variety, “At the helm for the first time, Douglas Tait has delivered standout performances from a talented cast in this unique and mesmerizing feature. We can’t wait for everyone to see Isabel Cueva’s stellar performance.”
The fact is, I would be guaranteed to watch Angel Baby regardless of how these synopsis sounds, simply because it’s directed by someone who played horror icons and I look forward to seeing what a Douglas Tait-directed movie is going to be like. But this also sounds interesting beyond the icon connection.
