Well, I’ll be damned! After being scrapped by Blue Sky Studios when it was near completion, then canceled by Fox, and resurrected by Netflix, Nimona is taking a victory lap with today’s Nimona teaser trailer! Inspired by ND Stevenson‘s (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) webcomic-turned-graphic novel, the story of Nimona unfolds in a colorful techno-future where Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic, medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem. Oh, and did I mention Nimona is a shape-shifter?
With the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters blur, the unlikely duo set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to… just wreak serious havoc.
In Netflix’s Nimona teaser trailer, fairytales are taken to task with humor, sass, and shape-shifting-related mayhem! As all hell breaks loose, Nimona surprises a demanding princess by changing into a fire-breathing dragon, a megalodon, and King Kong, to cause panic in the kingdom. Nimona features gorgeous CGI animation with a soft, storybook-style color palette. As heavy metal plays, Nimona transforms into several creatures while making her escape from the chaos she created. If you’re looking for an animated film with style, attitude, and unpredictable twists and turns, Nimona is coming to Netflix on June 30!
Nick Bruno and Troy Quane direct from a screenplay inspired by ND Stevenson’s National Book Award-nominated New York Times best-selling graphic novel. Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, Indya Moore, RuPaul Charles, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman lead the cast.
Nimona is one of my favorite graphic novels of the past decade. It’s an imaginative, goodly-humored, all-ages adventure filled with action, magic, snark, and unforgettable characters. The film hit several snags on its way to Netflix, but now that it’s got a release date, fans can start getting excited about Nimona’s animated debut!
