All roads must come to an end, but there could be a few miles left for the Fast & Furious franchise. Although it was previously announced that Fast X – Part 2 would be the end of the series, Vin Diesel recently teased that it could be a three-part finale. “Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter,” Diesel said. “And after the studio saw this one, they said, ‘Could you make “Fast X,” the finale, a trilogy?’“
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fast X director Louis Leterrier wouldn’t say whether Part 2 will be the final sequel, but suggests that it could all come down to how this latest movie does.
Let’s see what this one does. You know what’s beautiful about this franchise is that the audience gave the love and then the franchise kept growing and delivered for the fans, but also surprised them. Don’t shove it down people’s throats, but give people what they love. So let’s see [what happens next].
Louis Leterrier added that “it’s hard to give an answer” about the future of the franchise past Fast X – Part 2. “I mean, who knows? Two years ago we didn’t think that movies would ever exist anymore,” he explained. “Knock on wood, count my lucky stars that we’re making giant movies that now are being seen by millions of people around the globe. It’s amazing, and I’m so happy that we’re part of this summer where it feels like the excitement for movies is back.” Leterrier said that while Fast X – Part 2 will an “an ending,” there are “many ways to get there. Many roads will lead us to the end.” So if Fast X makes a boatload of cash… you can expect the franchise’s engine to keep running a little longer.
Louis Leterrier will return to direct the possible finale to the franchise. It was also announced that Universal had tapped Christina Hodson (The Flash) and Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox) to write the script for Fast X – Part 2, as the studio wanted some “new voices” for the finale.
“Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever,” reads the official Fast X description. “In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante, witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price. Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.“ Fast X will hit theaters on May 19th.
