Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season 3

Although Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard are coming to a close, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is boldly moving forward with another season. Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman spoke at a recent MIT event, where he revealed that filming has already begun on season 3 of the series.

Today or tomorrow we’re announcing the airdate of the second season, which we filmed like 17 years ago… and you’ll be really surprised because we just went all over the place,” Akiva Goldsman said. “And we’ve just starting filming the third season now.” Paramount hasn’t officially confirmed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be back for season 3, so Goldsman’s comment is the first indication that we’ve got more of the series to look forward to. The second season of Strange New Worlds started shooting months before the first season’s premiere, so it’s not a huge surprise that the third season is following a similar schedule.

Akiva Goldsman implied that Paramount would be announcing the release date of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 soon, but as the MIT event took place close to a week ago, that announcement clearly isn’t coming as soon as he thought. With First Contact Day (April 5th) just around the corner, I imagine that the second season release date and the official confirmation of Strange New Worlds season 3 will be announced.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Christoper Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’an Noonien Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga. The series has quickly become one of my favourite modern-day Star Trek shows (although Picard season 3 has been fantastic), so I’m thrilled that we’ve got at least two more seasons to look forward to.

The first season of Strange New Worlds was released on Blu-ray today. That will be followed by a 4K Ultra HD release on May 16th, which will mark the first 4K release of any Star Trek TV series.
