Jack Black (School of Rock, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) is reuniting with Bobby and Peter Farrelly for Dear Santa, a Christmas comedy with a twist of satanic panic! Black teamed with the Farrelly Brothers for 2001’s cringe comedy Shallow Hal, starring Black as Hal, a man who falls in love with a 300-pound woman because of her inner beauty. The crude humor film is a product of its time, featuring Gweneth Paltrow and Jason Alexander. Dear Santa is entirely different and sounds like something worth raising your horns for.
According to Deadline, Dear Santa centers on a young boy who, in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends them to Satan instead. Black recently teased the project on social media by posting pictures of himself enjoying an elaborate Christmas display. In the photos, Black poses in the back of a brightly-lit penguin and reindeer standee. The mysterious images sent Black’s loyal fanbase into a frenzy, with many confused about the timing of the post.
Joining Black for Dear Santa is Robert Timothy Smith, with Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, PJ Byrne newcomer Jaden Carson Baker, Kai Cech, and Austin Post in supporting roles.
Shallow Hal weighed a mighty $141+M at the worldwide box office. Fans and critics went ballistic for the trio’s off-color comedy, leading to a hunger for more from the team. Black and the Farrelly Brothers have kept in touch but have been waiting for the perfect project to reunite. Dear Santa is that project giving fans a reason to be bursting with Christmas cheer before the season comes into… well, season.
Jack Black’s next film is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, in which he plays the classic video game villain Bowser. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelnic direct from a script by Matthew Fogel, with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Charles Matinet leading the cast.
What do you think about the concept for Dear Santa? Is the Devil going to save Christmas? Will Dave Grohl’s Demon cameo in the film? We’ll watch this one and let you know when we learn more.
