I’m not sure if the world is ready for double the Rachel Weisz. Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for Dead Ringers, a new psychological thriller series that puts a modern spin on David Cronenberg’s original movie.
Rachel Weisz plays the dual roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, “twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront.” The Dead Ringers teaser trailer doesn’t give us much beyond thirty seconds of Rachel Weisz times two, but really, that’s all I need.
The original Dead Ringers movie was directed by David Cronenberg and starred Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists. The film went on to win ten Genie Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor. The Prime Video series is expected to have a similar feel to the 1988 film but will have a different tone as it explores women’s healthcare and the issues it faces. Rachel Weisz is a big fan of Cronenberg’s movie, telling Vogue that Dead Ringers was “just seared into my memory. I liked that it was deeply psychological, deeply twisted, perverse, and thrilling. I think that’s quite fertile territory.“
The Dead Ringers series was created, written, and executive produced by Emmy-nominated writer and playwright Alice Birch (Normal People, Succession, The Wonder). Sean Durkin (Martha March May Marlene) directed the first two installments of the six episode series and co-directed the finale, with Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body), Karena Evans (P-Valley), and Lauren Wolkstein (A Friend of the Family) helming the rest. In addition to Rachel Weisz, the series also stars Britne Oldford (The Umbrella Academy) as Genevieve, Poppy Liu (Better Call Saul) as Greta, Michael Chernus (Orange is the New Black) as Tom, Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty) as Rebecca, and Emily Meade (The Leftovers) as Susan.
All six episodes of Dead Ringers will premiere on Prime Video on April 21st in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
