The date for The Golden Globes is ready to be revealed! The annual awards show is returning to a Sunday night time slot, though a network to host the event has yet to be confirmed. The 81st edition of the aways show will take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
This year’s celebration, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, aired on Tuesday, January 10, on NBC. Moving the awards resulted from an entertainment industry boycott inspired by Los Angeles Times exposés in 2021, focusing on the embarrassing fact that the Golden Globes organization, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, failed to host Black members. The writings also revealed the outfit’s unethical conduct and suspect financial practices. In other words, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association needed to get its house in order before the show could air.
The Golden Globes isn’t the most popular awards show on television. In 2023, the ceremony averaged 6.25 million viewers, down 10 percent from 6.91 million from the 2021 presentation. Journalists and viewers alike attributed the loss in numbers to Covid restrictions. However, it’s been clear the event needs restructuring for years.
Your guess is as good as ours regarding where the Golden Globes 2024 event will occur. The SAG Awards is entering a deal with Netflix to stream the event there. The Golden Globes could go in a similar direction, though it’s early in the game to know. When you consider how many homes use streaming services as their preferred way of viewing content, a deal with Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or otherwise could be the way to go.
What could the Golden Globes 2024 ceremony do to spice things up? Is moving back to Sunday an intelligent way to share next year’s event? The show will dominate water cooler talk, but with so many people still working from home, is that even a thing? You could start your Monday morning web meeting with a bit of Golden Globes talk, but the Golden Globes creates a different enthusiasm than the Oscars. Either way, we’ll cover the event, drool over the fashion, and celebrate the evening’s winners.
