Tulsa King: Terence Winter will be stepping down as showrunner before season 2

As the Sylvester Stallone drama Tulsa King gets renewed for a second season at Paramount+, Deadline has learned that the series showrunner for the first season, Terence Winter, will not be continuing in his position going forward. He will remain on board as executive producer, but Winter will now focus on other projects, which will include a streaming series with Martin Scorsese, whom he often collaborates with. As well as a limited series about the 1986 New York Mets, which is revealed to have been a passion project for the writer/producer.

Tulsa King is one of many shows that come from Taylor Sheridan, who has created such hits for Paramount+ like Yellowstone, 1923, and Mayor of Kingstown. It is reported that Winter had decided to depart just ahead of season 2 due to creative differences. Deadline says it was apparent in an earlier interview that Sheridan and Winter had conflicting visions for the direction in which to take the show and the character played by Stallone. Winter had even gushed about working with the legendary action star and would often inquire about Rocky in between scenes.

Tulsa King also features an ensemble cast including Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Jay Will, Max Casella, Domenick Lombardozzi, Vincent Piazza, A.C. Peterson, Garrett Hedlund, and Dana Delany. Sheridan executive produces the show along with Winter, Stallone, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Allen Coulter, and Braden Aftergood. The show is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

Winter is an Emmy Award-winning writer, having been nominated for his work with Scorsese on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and also nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay on The Wolf of Wall Street. He would take home Emmys for his work on HBO’s acclaimed show, The Sopranos.

The synopsis for Tulsa King, per Deadline, reads “Tulsa King follows New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone) just after he is released from prison to set up shop in Tulsa, OK. Realizing that his mob family might not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters, helping establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet.”
