The trailer for Scream 2022 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Scream 6, which is set to receive a theatrical release on March 10th, promises this sequel will feature a Ghostface like no other… and in a new interview with Total Film magazine (shared on Games Radar), Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett said this new Ghostface is bolder and more brazen than their predecessors.
Bettinelli-Olpin told the magazine, “We wanted to make this really different, while still having all the stuff you love. Having a bolder, more brazen Ghostface was a big part of that.“
Gillett revealed that Scream 2022 screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick had written the script for Scream 6 before the previous film was even released, so the new sequel was able to just “confidently be what it is” instead of being a response to the reception of Scream 2022 in any way. He added that the new movie “really moves like it’s on rocket fuel. You sit down, it starts, and the movie is just a ride. You get off two hours later, and you feel like you haven’t taken a breath.“
We’re get to take that slasher movie rocket ride when Scream 6 reaches the big screen next month.
Although set in New York City, Scream 6 was actually filmed in Montreal. This one will show us what happens when the four survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.
Those four survivors are the Scream 2022 characters played by returning stars Melissa Barrera (as Samantha Carpenter), Jenna Ortega (as Samantha’s sister Tara Carpenter), Jasmin Savoy Brown (as Mindy Meeks-Martin), and Mason Gooding (as Mindy’s brother Chad Meeks-Martin). Courteney Cox is reprising the role of Gale Weathers. Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Dermot Mulroney, and Henry Czerny have also been cast in unspecified roles. And Scream 4‘s Hayden Panettiere is back as Kirby Reed. According to YouTuber Critical Overlord, it looks like Thomas Cadrot might be in the cast as well.
Neve Campbell was asked to reprise the role of franchise heroine Sidney Prescott in Scream 6, but passed on it due to a pay dispute. The script did need to be rewritten when the filmmakers found out Sidney wouldn’t be coming back.
Vanderbilt is producing Scream 6 with Paul Neinstein and William Sherak for Project X Entertainment. Original Scream screenwriter Kevin Willamson serves as executive producer alongside Chad Villella, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, Marianne Maddalena, and Spyglass’s Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre.
