M3GAN sequel: James Wan is hoping we’ll get to witness M3GAN’s Revenge

Way back in mid-November, it was said that Universal Pictures was so pleased with the sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review HERE) and the response to the film’s trailer that sequel discussions were already underway. But producer James Wan, who also came up with the story for the film, felt that it was bad luck to talk with the press about a sequel before the first movie was even released. (Although he did feel comfortable enough to hint, “I always think of a bigger world. I don’t just think of that one story; I think of the bigger world. So if we’re fortunate enough to tell any other stories, we can pull from the bigger world.“) Made on a budget of $12 million, M3GAN just pulled in $45 million at the global box office over its opening weekend – so now Wan is ready to start working toward bringing us M3GAN’s Revenge!

A Deadline report on the film’s opening weekend box office mentions that “a sequel is already in early development.” And a post on Wan’s Facebook page indicates he’s anxious to push it forward: “THANK YOU to everyone who checked out M3GAN this weekend and made this “little doll movie” an irrepressible hit. It’s hard these days to break out with original/new IPs, but horror fans prove time and time again why they’re the best. Obviously none of this would’ve happened if it weren’t for the terrifically creepy, sassy and emotional movie that Gerard Johnstone blessed us with, the wickedly sharp and darkly humorous script by Akela Cooper, and the super talented cast for grounding the whole affair. And of course the incredible special effects team of artists and technicians who imbued M3gan with so much personality and brought her to morbid life! Finally a big special shoutout to Judson Scott and Michael Clear, my amazing team at ATOMIC MONSTER, for guiding this baby from the inception and shepherding the production with the awesome folks, of Couper Samuelson and Ryan Turek, at BLUMHOUSE. Jason Blum and myself are beyond thankful and grateful to see how much love M3GAN is receiving, and hopefully what all this means is that we get the chance to explore the bigger world of A.I. and perhaps witness — M3gan’s Revenge????“

Based on a story crafted by Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). The film has the following synopsis:

She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.

From the most prolific minds in horror — James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Blumhouse, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man — comes a fresh new face in terror.

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems — a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.

Allison Williams (Get Out), Violet McGraw (The Haunting of Hill House), Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy Bebop), Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), and Stephane Garneau-Monten (Straight Forward) star.

A collaboration between Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Atomic Monster, in association with Divide/Conquer, M3GAN was produced by James Wan and Jason Blum. Williams serves as executive producer alongside Mark Katchur, Ryan Turek, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath.
