House of the Dragon writer teases Blood and Cheese storyline in season 2

House of the Dragon, season 2, Blood and Cheese

Those who had read George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels knew exactly what to expect from the Red Wedding in the Game of Thrones TV series. The sequence was one of the most memorable moments from the novels and the TV series, and it seems that House of the Dragon will have its own Red Wedding with Blood and Cheese.

I won’t get into specifics, but if you’ve read George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood, upon which House of the Dragon is based, you’ll know all about Blood and Cheese. The term is a nickname given to two characters who are tasked with taking revenge against Queen Alicent after the death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys at the hands of Aemond. House of the Dragon writer Sara Hess told Variety that they’re “currently writing the finale of season 2,” and that the Blood and Cheese storyline has already been completed. “I don’t think you will be disappointed,” Hess teased. As the franchise has never turned away from gruesome bloodshed, it’s probably safe to say that this will be one story point that will have audiences talking when the second season of House of the Dragon premieres.

George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood is a Targaryen history book which chronicles the history of House Targaryen, starting off with “Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and [going on] to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold the throne, all the way up to the civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

As for where the second season of House of the Dragon will take us, showrunner Ryan Condal has teased to Entertainment Weekly that the first season was merely “setting the table for a very bloody feast to come.” Condal added, “The reason that I wanted to really spend our time doing this is because I wanted everybody to understand who all of these characters were and the long history they had behind them — behind their fathers and their grandfathers — that led us to this point where they end up fighting a civil war against each other.” With the history behind the warring families out of the way, Condal is “really interested in picking up with all of those characters that we spent all of this time introducing, particularly Rhaenyra and Alicent’s families, and seeing what happens now that we’ve flipped the chessboard over and spilled the pieces on the ground. How do all those react? That’s the story that we tell in season 2 and beyond.

House of the Dragon doesn’t have an official release date yet, but is expected to return in 2024.
