Writer/director Joe Begos‘s holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas – which got an 8/10 review from our own JimmyO that you can read HERE – is now playing in theatres, and is also available to watch on the Shudder streaming service. And if the movie does well, Begos is hoping to have the chance to make two sequels back-to-back! The filmmaker revealed his sequel hopes during an interview with Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew podcast.
Christmas Bloody Christmas has the following synopsis:
It’s Christmas Eve and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party, until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated. Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal and violence, ultimately forcing Tori into a blood-splattered battle for survival against the ruthless heavy metal Saint Nick himself.
The film stars Riley Dandy (That’s Amor), Jeff Daniel Phillips (Rob Zombie’s The Munsters), Abraham Benrubi (ER), Sam Delich (Spiderhead), Jonah Ray Rodrigues (Mystery Science Theater 3000), Dora Madison (Friday Night Lights), Jeremy Gardner (The Battery), Graham Skipper (Mystery Spot), Kansas Bowling (The Third Saturday in October Part V), Josh Ethier (Beyond the Gates), Elliott Gilbert (The Fandango Sisters), Adam Dietrich (The Vast of Night), Matt Mercer (Contracted), Aerial Washington (Fabulous High), and Begos himself.
The sequel talk came up on The Boo Crew podcast when Begos was asked if there were any sequences he had in mind for Christmas Bloody Christmas that didn’t make it into the film. He said, “There’s one scene in the treatment that I had in the first draft that I took out … (Tori Tooms) is driving and she stops at a gas station and she’s trying to explain to this guy what happened. She’s covered in blood and the gas station attendant doesn’t believe her. When she’s trying to tell this guy what’s going on, a car pulls up and a Santa gets out that’s just some Santa who got off his shift. She starts freaking out and the Santa comes in, then the cops come in. That set-up is so good, but I couldn’t end it like I wanted to … But I like that set-up, I wish I could have figured that out, but I just didn’t have time. Maybe in the sequel. If the movie does good this week, my dream is to do two and three simultaneously. I have an idea for two and three that are really strong. I’ve never wanted to sequelize a movie I’ve done before, and I want to sequelize this so bad. I made sure I got the sequel rights in our original contract.“
Begos even started doling out some bits and pieces of sequel information: “Maybe from Tori’s lawsuit against the Robo+ company she now has a double decker store in a mall. Some mall set pieces going on. The movie of the story in production. Tori’s hook hand going on… Now I’m just getting into spoiler territory.“
I enjoyed Christmas Bloody Christmas – not quite as much as JimmyO did, but I had a good time with it overall. I would gladly watch more killer robot Santa action from Begos, so I really hope he’ll get the chance to make the back-to-back sequels.
Begos previously directed Almost Human, The Mind’s Eye, Bliss, and VFW.
