Silk: Spider Society: Sony’s Spider-Man Spin-Off series ordered by MGM+ and Amazon

Sony’s intricate web of Spider-Man-related projects is spinning up plans for a spin-off series focusing on Cindy Moon, otherwise known as Silk. According to reports, a cluster of Marvel characters are scuttling toward the small screen after MGM+, and Amazon Prime ordered several live-action series from Sony Pictures Entertainment. The first project swinging out of the deal is Silk: Spider Society, with The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang acting as showrunner.

The deal to bring Sony’s Spider-Verse to streaming services has been in the works for a while. Arrangements to acquire the rights were a nightmare to organize, but now that a linear network for debuts is secured, the show can get on the road. Projects like Silk: Spider Society will debut on MGM+ (which is changing its name in January), then go to Amazon Prime Video in the States. Amazon will also be the show’s international home across 240 countries and territories.

Created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, Silk made her comic book debut on the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (2014). Though her appearance was just a cameo at the time, Silk returned in full force when The Amazing Spider-Man #4 hit stands. As the story continues, Cindy quickly becomes a fan-favorite character, particularly with readers looking for a bit of diversity from Marvel’s extensive line of hard-hitting heroes. A solo series featuring Silk was launched in 2015 by writer Robbie Thompson with art by Stacey Lee. Since then, Cindy has become a significant player in the Marvel Universe and can be found swinging her way through multiple events and side stories alongside superheroes from Marvel’s Spider-Verse.

In the pages of Marvel comics, Cindy is a student in Peter Parker’s class who also is bitten by a radioactive spider around the same time as Peter. She gains abilities similar to his, though she can spin webs out of her fingertips, possesses an eidetic memory, and has advanced Spider-Sense (known as Silk Sense) far more potent than Peter’s. Although she has less superhuman strength than Peter, Cindy is much faster and carries a dark past atop her super-powered shoulders.

The deal includes 900 characters available to Sony, who landed access before Disney purchased Marvel. Sony is looking for ways to make money hand over fist after the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: No Way Home. For a while, fans believed Sony would sell the rights to Spider-Man back to Disney/Marvel, but now that the webhead and his friends are cash cows, Sony is ready to go big or go home.

Silk: Spider Society is one project spinning out of a multi-year deal with Amazon Studios. With Kang at the helm, whose Walking Dead series is a pop culture touchstone, it feels like Cindy Moon is in more than capable hands.
