Fifteen long years ago, Dwayne Johnson first teased that he was going to play Black Adam on the big screen. Yes, in 2007, the first reports came out that The Rock wanted to play Black Adam on screen. Since then, superhero movies have taken over the box office, but there didn’t seem to be a peep about this movie finally happening for a long time. This weekend the film finally hit the big screen fulfilling Johnson’s promise to bring the character to life. The film is filled with all sorts of Black Adam Easter Eggs that you might have missed.
WARNING!!!!! There will be spoilers for Black Adam below.
Adrianna Tomaz And Amon
The film centers on Adrianna Tomaz and her son Amon as they look for ways to finally free their home of Intergang. This is not the first live-action outing for the character. Way back in 1975, the character was first created as Andrea Thomas on the CBS TV series The Secrets Of Isis. She was a science teacher who gained the powers of Isis. It was paired with the live-action Shazam! TV series to create The Shazam! Isis Hour.
The character was later introduced in the comics, but during their big series 52, she would be re-imagined as Adrianna Tomaz, a refugee who Intergang kidnaped. She was saved by Black Adam and convinced him that he could make Kahndaq a better country. He then gave her the Amulet Of Isis, which gave her superpowers. They were later married.
Amon, on the other hand, is her son in the film. In the comics, he was actually her brother. In the film, he acts as Black Adam’s teenage sidekick, just as Freddy Freeman does in Shazam! He teaches Black Adam how superheroes work in this time period and how he can make himself stand out more. Maybe later, he will end up like his comics counterpart and have his own superpowers. He goes by Osiris and is gifted them just like Freddy Freeman was by Shazam.
Cyclone’s Origin
We meet Maxine “Cyclone” Hunkel as part of the JSA. When Al tells her that he thinks her powers are incredible, she tells him that she was kidnapped when she was fifteen and injected with nanobots by an evil scientist. This is the same as her comics origin. The scientist in question is T.O. Morrow, who would go on to create the android Red Tornado.
It had similar powers to Maxine’s and was not the first to go by the name Red Tornado. That would actually be Maxine’s grandmother Mathilda Hunkel. She was part of the original JSA. In the classic DC Comics story Kingdom Come which takes place in the future, we would see that Maxine would also adopt the Red Tornado name.
The Wizard Was Right
Back in 2019’s Shazam!, we learned the Wizard had previously given the power of Shazam to another chosen one. It was said that he abused his power and almost destroyed the Rock Of Eternity. He was talking about Black Adam, and we actually get to see what happened when he returned to The Rock Of Eternity. Almost all of the wizards were killed. Luckily one survived, and we got Shazam! It’s a fun movie, and I can’t wait for the sequel. A great Black Adam Easter Egg that started all the way back in 2019.
Emilia Harcourt
The JSA drops Black Adam off at Amanda Waller’s new underwater bunker, and we see a familiar face running the site. Emilia Harcourt from The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series looks to be in charge. She lays out how they plan to store Black Adam to keep him from getting his powers back. From the looks of it, business is good as the whole place is filled up with other people placed under Harcourt’s care. There are a lot of dark silhouettes in the tanks they are kept in, but we don’t get a good look at anyone in particular.
The Original Champion
In the film, it’s revealed that Teth-Adam was not the original champion chosen by the Wizard’s Council. His son was the one who initially took on the role of Kahndaq’s champion. He passed the power to his father to help him heal. But when the wizards first grant him the power of Shazam, he looks a lot like his comic book counterpart. Later he adopts a different look, and that form is actually played by Uli Latukefu, who plays Dwayne Johnson on the TV series Young Rock.
S.H.A.Z.A.M.
While Black Adam uses the same magic word as Billy Batson in the Shazam! movie, it means something different. For Billy, the word Shazam stands for the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. To go along with the Kahndaq culture, for Black Adam, it stands for the stamina of Shu, the swiftness of Horus, the strength of Amon, the wisdom of Zehuti, the power of Aton, and the courage of Mehen. Both spell the same word and work the same.
Eternium
For the Black Adam film, Eternium acts sort of like Kryptonite does for Superman. It’s of magical origin and can hurt those who use magic. Its origin in the comics comes from the Rock Of Eternity. In one story, the Rock Of Eternity was destroyed. The matter that was cast off of it spread across the universe and became Eternium. It would depower anyone using the magic of Shazam, and any contact would lead to severe injuries. In the future, the Rock Of Eternity was reassembled.
Nth Metal
When we meet the JSA, Hawkman confirms that the plane they are using is made out of Nth Metal. This material is closely tied to Hawkman in the comics. Nth metal has gravity-defying properties, so he uses it in his wings and armor, allowing him to fly. His mace is also made out of it and can shapeshift into different weapons as he needs them.
King Adam
After Black Adam defeats Sabbac, Adrianna tells him that he could become the new ruler of Khandaq. He sits down on his throne and strikes a pose that is purposefully similar to a famous cover of Black Adam from the series 52. On the front of issue #45, Adam is seated on a stone throne as he now is the ruler of Khandaq. His rule in the comics is to build Khandaq into a great country and to turn back any invaders that try to enter the country with nefarious intentions. He makes a good ruler until it all begins to fall apart by the series end. A fantastic Black Adam Easter Egg for comic fans.
Supes Return
The worst–kept secret right now is that Henry Cavill returns to his role of Superman in a post-credits scene. An interesting thing to note about the appearance is that Cavill’s Superman looks more like the comics version of Superman. His hair has the iconic spit curl, and his suit is noticeably brighter than the drab colors the Zack Snyder version always wore. This is a notice to DC fans that the plan going forward is to give them a Superman everyone recognizes. To reinforce this, they even play the classic John Williams Superman theme from the 1978 movie.
