Back to the Future: A musical based on the 1985 classic is coming to Broadway in new teaser trailer

It’s October 21^st, Back to the Future day. Sure, it may be past 2015, but the future is still celebrating this 1980s classic. The musical adaptation of the popular franchise, which won an Olivier Award, will be making its entrance into Broadway this summer. Two of the cast members of the West End shows will be reprising their roles at the Winter Garden Theater production of the musical, Robert Bart as Doc Brown and Hugh Coles as George McFly. The actor who will portray Marty will be announced along with the rest of the cast.

Deadline has new details of the Broadway debut, including a teaser trailer, which includes the original Doc Brown, Christopher Lloyd, making a special appearance. The lead producer, Colin Ingram, says in a statement, “Marty, Doc and everyone in Hill Valley will be living on Broadway and 50th Street for hopefully many years to come and we look forward to entertaining and thrilling audiences with this moving and spectacular musical version of the much beloved film. I’m delighted to be bringing Tony Award winner Roger Bart back to Broadway and introduce Olivier Award nominee Hugh Coles as George McFly who have enthralled audiences in London.”

The Back to the Future musical has a book authored by the film’s co-writer, Bob Gale, as well as new music and lyrics by the famed film composer Alan Silvestri, who created the iconic theme for the movies, and Glen Ballard. Naturally, the musical will also include favorites like “The Power of Love,” originally by Huey Lewis and the News, and “Johnny B. Goode,” by Marvin Berry’s cousin, Chuck Berry. The musical is set to be directed by John Rando, known for Urinetown.

Bob Gale says in a statement, “If Bob Zemeckis and I time traveled back to 1980 and told our younger selves that the script they were struggling to write would become a Broadway musical 43 years later, they’d kick us out of their office and call us crazy….The London production exceeded our original expectations on every level, and we’re certain the Broadway version, anchored by the brilliantly talented Roger Bart and Hugh Coles, along with the fantastic songs by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, will be even better.”

The Broadway previews begin on Friday, June 30 and the official opening beginning on Thursday, August 3.

Tickets go on sale on October 28.
