It’s been a big day for Silent Hill fans. Konami announced several new Silent Hill games today, including a full remake of Silent Hill 2. But Konami also announced Return to Silent Hill, a new movie which will be directed by Christophe Gans.
Christophe Gans directed the original Silent Hill movie back in 2006, which still stands as one of the better video game movies. Return to Silent Hill will be based on the story of Silent Hill 2, with Gans saying that the film “is a story of a young guy coming back to Silent Hill, where he has known a great love and what he’s going to find is a pure nightmare.” Along with producer Victor Hadida, Gans discussed the project in a video released during Konomi’s presentation, which you can check out below.
Victor Hadida said that Return to Silent Hill will modernize the franchise while also staying “very true to the video game.” We’ll see many of the franchise’s familiar monsters, including Pyramid Head.
Gans has been teasing a new Silent Hill movie for several years, and actually revealed that he had penned the script for Return to Silent Hill earlier this summer. “The new Silent Hill movie is totally independent from the two previous movies made and respects the way Silent Hill has evolved,” Gans said. “Most of the time, these are stand-alone stories. Silent Hill is a bit like The Twilight Zone, the fourth dimension, a place where anything and everything can happen. I worked on a new Silent Hill which is a Silent Hill of the year 2023 – because the film would be released next year – and not a Silent Hill as I imagined it in 2006. It is a Silent Hill for today’s audiences while being ultra respectful of the saga.” Silent Hill: Revelation was released six years after the first film, but wasn’t received nearly as well.
