Spider-Man 2 Revisited: The Best Spider-Man Movie?

Last Updated on October 20, 2022

When it comes to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, there is never any shortage of debate over the status the films have earned among comic book and movie fans alike. But one thing that seems to ring true in ANY circle of fandom- is that 2004’s Spider-Man 2 is a stand-out film in the continuous and ever-expanding universe of Marvel Characters in cinema.

The absolute smash hit that was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man ignited audience’s sense of wonder for what was possible on the big screen. And of course the $825 global haul would secure Raimi’s seat at the helm of a sequel. The second instalment of the web-swinging boy-next-door would of course come with the immense pressure of building off of the well-received first entry- while also having its own drama with the studio, crew, and stars behind the scenes. But the main question is- does it hold up against today’s impossible standards?

To some, Spider-Man 2 stands as perhaps the greatest Spider-Man movie ever made. Certainly, it’s considered the highlight of Sam Raimi’s trilogy, with the now infamous Spider-Man 3 laying an egg with fans when it would come out a few years later (the dancing Peter Parker bit is a moment that will live in infamy). Given the fact that Tobey Maguire famously returned for Spider-Man: No Way Home, how does Spider-Man 2 fare in hindsight?

Find out in today’s episode of Marvel Revisited. This episode is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes. Let us know how you think Spider-Man 2 holds up in the comments!
