The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White is going from the kitchen to an institute that aims to calculate the depths of one person’s love for another in Apple Original Films Fingernails. The English-language feature hails from Christos Nikou, the award-winning filmmaker behind 2020’s Apples and several other projects.
Fingernails is a science-fiction love story about an institution developing a test to measure the amount of love between couples. Is their love genuine? Does a pattern of constant compromise weaken their bond over time? The institute wants couples to succeed, though keeping the fire burning is more complex than one might assume. In the film, Anna (Buckley) starts working at the institute as an assistant to Trevor (Ahmed), an enigmatic instructor. Meanwhile, White plays Ryan, Anna’s long-time partner in a certified love relationship.
Nikou directs Fingernails from a script he co-wrote with Stavros Raptis and Sam Steiner.
As for White, the Shameless alum is in high demand after giving a commanding performance in the first season of Hulu’s The Bear. If you’ve not seen The Bear, it’s like watching Uncut Gems in a kitchen, with tempers flying through the air faster than it takes me to whip up a batch of my award-winning tacos. White will also star alongside Zac Efron and Harris Dickinson in A24‘s The Iron Claw, which focuses on the wrestling siblings the Von Erichs. The Iron Claw will require White, Efron, and Dickinson to dig deep and deliver emotionally-charged performances as troubled family members working within an industry that could quickly destroy them.
What do you think about the concept for Fingernails? Can science measure love? Do you think you and your partner would pass a series of tests determining your devotion toward one another? Or, would all the things you’ve left unspoken threaten the foundation of your bond? If you’re up to it, let us know in the comments.
