The anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead is scheduled to premiere on AMC at 9pm on Sunday, August 14th – and showrunner Channing Powell has said that they’re using this show to take risks and push the boundaries of the Walking Dead franchise. The first season of Tales of the Walking Dead consists of six episodes, and according to Powell we can expect three of those episodes to be closer to the tone of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, while the other three will be a bit more “out there”. But Tales of the Walking Dead isn’t going so far out there that it will include a musical episode. Yet. Powell confirmed that a musical episode has been scripted and could happen in a future season.
Powell said,
We did come up with a musical episode that, just for production reasons, was going to be a little bit too difficult to film. Should we get a Season 2 or 3, I’m going to push for that one if I can. It lives in my heart and in my mind.”
Collider points out that a musical option was always on the table, so we shouldn’t be too surprised if it does happen. On a 2020 episode of The Talking Dead, Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple said, “We may be doing different formats and possibility utilizing animation, music, different mediums. We want to surprise people every week with what they will be getting (on Tales of the Walking Dead).“
Executive produced by Gimple and Powell, who has been a writer and producer on The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead is an
episodic anthology of six original, standalone stories focused on both new and established characters within the walker apocalypse.
The cast of the first six episodes of Tales of the Walking Dead includes Terry Crews (The Expendables), Parker Posey (Lost in Space), Olivia Munn (The Predator), Anthony Edwards (ER), Poppy Liu (Hacks), Jillian Bell (Rough Night), Daniella Pineda (Cowboy Bebop), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Loan Chabanol (Fading Gigolo), Embeth Davidtz (Army of Darkness), Gage Munroe (Nobody), and former The Walking Dead cast member Samantha Morton – who reprises the role of Alpha.
AMC+ subscribers will get the watch the first two episodes on August 14th, and all remaining episodes hit the streaming service one week early starting on August 21st.
