George A. Romero’s The Amusement Park is coming to Blu-ray in September

Last year, George A. Romero‘s long lost 1973 film The Amusement Park was released through the Shudder streaming service in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Now Shudder has announced that they’re also bringing The Amusement Park to Blu-ray, and this physical media release has a street date of September 13th!

Romero was hired to make The Amusement Park by the Lutheran Society, and it was meant to be a TV PSA on elder abuse. The film was shelved when the Lutheran Society saw how strange and disturbing it was, but thankfully Romero’s fans now have the chance to watch it, nearly fifty years later. The film stars Lincoln Maazel of Romero’s Martin as

an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies and humiliations of aging in America are manifested through roller coasters and chaotic crowds.

Shudder has said that The Amusement Park may be

Romero’s wildest and most imaginative movie, an allegory about the nightmarish realities of growing older, and is an alluring snapshot of the filmmaker’s early artistic capacity and style and would go on to inform his ensuing filmography.

Romero’s widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero had this to say when the Shudder deal was announced:

We at the George A. Romero Foundation are thrilled that after this long journey, this Lutheran’s society’s industrial with its poignant message will finally get its light! The first and only work-for-hire in Romero’s career sheds a new perspective on an ongoing issue of ageism and Romero’s uncanny sense of reflection on society, and the Romero ‘footprint’ is ever present and bodes well for the future of his impact on American cinema.”

Romero is my favorite of the “masters of horror” and I still collect physical media, so I will definitely be buying The Amusement Park on Blu-ray and adding the disc to my collection. Will you be buying The Amusement Park? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
