The Thing: John Carpenter can’t share what he knows about Blumhouse reboot

At the start of 2020, so long ago that I had forgotten this even happened, it was announced that Blumhouse Productions and executive producer Alan Donnes were teaming up for a reboot of The Thing. Since Blumhouse has been working with John Carpenter on their trilogy of Halloween sequels, you would assume that they would want to keep him in the loop on their version of The Thing as well, since Carpenter’s 1982 version of the concept is considered by many to be one of the best horror movies ever made. And while Carpenter says nobody tells him anything, he has also confirmed to Syfy Wire that he knows more about this project than he’s allowed to say.

When ComicBook.com asked Carpenter about Blumhouse’s The Thing reboot earlier this year, he said:

There are updates that I am not allowed to speak of. We’ll see, we shall see. Never say never in the movie business, never say never.”

And when Syfy had the chance to speak with him recently, Carpenter said:

What the hell do I know? That’s the theme of my career. Write [this] down… John Carpenter: ‘What the hell do I know?’ No one tells me anything.”

When asked if he had any ideas for how a new Thing movie could be handled, this was the response:

I’m not gonna tell you that. That would be something I would figure out and do and then you would discover it in the movie theater.”

1951’s The Thing From Another World (watch it HERE), Carpenter’s 1982 film (watch it HERE), and the 2011 “premake” also called The Thing (watch that one HERE) were inspired by a 1938 novella called Who Goes There?, written by John W. Campbell Jr. For decades, no one knew that Who Goes There? was an abridged version of the story Campbell had originally written. Campbell’s complete story was recently published under the title Frozen Hell (you can pick up a copy at THIS LINK), and it has been said that Blumhouse’s The Thing reboot will take into account

additional chapters of John Campbell’s groundbreaking novel, Frozen Hell, that had been lost for decades. Now, for the first time ever, Campbell’s full vision will be realized on the big screen.
