Ethan Hawke is an exceptionally talented actor, one who continues to challenge himself. Having partnered with director Scott Derrickson on Sinister before, it’s clear the two bring something special to horror. In The Black Phone, Hawke portrays a man simply known as “The Grabber,” a sadistic creep who stalks young teens in the Seventies. The Black Phone is not only a great horror film, it’s one of this years’ best films, period. The feature is atmospheric, unsettling, and truly creepy. It also offers a couple of fantastic performances from its younger stars, Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. It’s a scary, and dare I say, sinister, trip into the past with yet another fantastic performance from Mr. Hawke.
I’ve had the pleasure of sitting down for an interview with Ethan Hawke in the past, and I was especially excited to talk with him about this. One thing that is especially disturbing about the film, is it takes place at a time where there were a number of child abductions. I asked the actor about playing a character such as this, and what kind of preparation went into it. He originally had a few doubts about playing this type of monster. Yet I’m thankful he did, Hawke is so utterly compelling here creating a wholly original, and frightening modern horror villain. Audiences want original films, correct? Well, if you want to see something fantastic that will get under your skin and stick with you long after your first viewing, you should see The Black Phone ASAP. The film opens Friday at a theatre near you.
