Box Office: Jurassic World: Dominion tops the chart with stellar debut

Despite garnering some of the worst reviews of the franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion managed to open pretty much on par with its predecessor, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Jurassic World: Dominion opened to $143.3 million over the weekend which is just 3% behind Fallen Kingdom. That’s pretty close to the $145 million box office prediction we posted earlier this week. Per Deadline, box office analytics corp EntTelligence says 10.8M moviegoers saw Dominion this weekend, which is the fourth-best admissions for a major studio movie’s opening weekend during the pandemic after Spider-Man: No Way Home (20.6M), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (14M) and Top Gun: Maverick  (11.6M). Dominion also posted the best stateside debut for a non-superhero movie during the pandemic, ahead of the $126.7 million 3-day previously posted by Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick. The performance of Jurassic World: Dominion shows just how critic proof this franchise is. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore which shows that moviegoers really enjoyed It. The movie bested its $125 million tracking and that’s something that should be celebrated as this year’s summer box office is showing the people really missed their blockbusters. Globally, Dominion is took in $319 million from overseas markets, bringing it’s global running total to $389 million.

Top Gun: Maverick, box office, weekend box office, second weekend, tom cruise

Showing there was nothing to fear from the dinosaurs is Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $50 million in its third weekend. That’s a decline of 44% which is pretty solid in the wake of Jurassic World: Dominion. Even more impressive about this hold: Universal took all of Top Gun 2‘s IMAX and premium format screens this weekend so the money grossed by the sequel is from regular showings. Top Gun: Maverick is a word of mouth sensation. There is no denying that. To date, Top Gun: Maverick has grossed $393 million at the domestic box office. Globally, the film has grossed $747 million after adding another $52.7 million internationally.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, weekend box office

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness placed third in its sixth weekend with $4.9 million for a domestic total of $397.8 million and foreign tally of $532.4 million. The Marvel and Disney movie is the first film of 2022 to cross $900 million, and finished Sunday with a total of $930.2 million in ticket sales.

20th Century and Disney’s The Bob’s Burgers Movie came in fourth with $2.3 million in its fourth weekend for a domestic tally of $27.1 million. While DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s The Bad Guys, released almost two months ago, rounded out the top five domestically with $2.3 million for a North American total of $91.5 million and $229.6 million globally.
