Silent Hill: Christophe Gans has written the script for a new movie

Two years ago, Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans said he was working with producer Victor Hadida on two horror video game adaptations: Fatal Frame and a new entry in the Silent Hill franchise. Speaking with Jeux Video (with thanks to VGC for the translation), Gans confirmed that he has since written the screenplays for both of those projects. And while he just said that the Fatal Frame script is ready, he had more to say about returning to the world of Silent Hill:

(the) new Silent Hill movie is totally independent from the two previous movies made and respects the way Silent Hill has evolved. Most of the time, these are stand-alone stories. Silent Hill is a bit like The Twilight Zone, the fourth dimension, a place where anything and everything can happen. I worked on a new Silent Hill which is a Silent Hill of the year 2023 – because the film would be released next year – and not a Silent Hill as I imagined it in 2006. It is a Silent Hill for today’s audiences while being ultra respectful of the saga. I’m aware that Silent Hill is a very big video game franchise, and a work of art in the noble sense of the word. The people who thought up Silent Hill put a lot of their guts into it. If I know them well, they are people of great integrity. For me, it was important to design a Silent Hill for today’s audience. It’s clear that today’s horror movies don’t look like the horror movies of 2006, and so much the better. Not that the horror films of 2007 weren’t good, but every genre goes through an evolution. I’m trying to take into account what I’ve seen recently, what’s most original and amazing in horror films, and see if Silent Hill has the seeds, or even the expression of that. Silent Hill has always been an unusual game and ahead of its time.”

It’s not clear if or when these Silent Hill and Fatal Frame projects will be moving forward, but we’ll let you know when more information is made available.

The first Silent Hill game has the following set-up:

Harry Mason and his daughter Cheryl are driving to their favorite vacation spot. Late that night, a figure suddenly appears from out of the darkness. Harry turns the wheel in panic, and the car careens off the road, knocking him unconscious. Awakening sometime later, he realizes that Cheryl is missing. Stumbling out of the wreckage, he heads toward the small town of Silent Hill.

And here’s the synopsis for the first Fatal Frame game:

Based on a true story, Fatal Frame is a horror adventure game. Guided by her sixth sense and armed only with an antique camera, Miku sets out to solve the mystery of her brother’s sudden disappearance. As the story unfolds, she discovers gruesome details about the Himura mansion’s troubled past. The property and surrounding area have a dark history involving grisly murders, an evil cult, and restless spirits.
