Echo: The first image of Alaqua Cox surfaces as production begins on the Marvel series

Marvel released the first image of Alaqua Cox in the role of the deaf badass Maya Lopez as production for her Disney+ solo series, Echo, begins. Set after the events of Marvel’s Hawkeye, Echo revolves around Maya’s journey of reflection as she leaves her criminal past behind to become Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Native American heroine.

The image above features Maya taking a siesta and regaining her composure, presumably after a run-in with a group of ne’er do-wells. As she leans against the back of a city maintenance truck, her outfit reveals some protective bits and bobs in the way of gloves, knee pads, and a backpack that could hold any number of armaments.

In Marvel’s Hawkeye, Maya is introduced as Kingpin’s protégé and commanding leader of the Tracksuit Mafia. Under the assumption that Hawkeye is responsible for her father’s death, Maya spends the bulk of the series hunting Clint Barton throughout New York City. However, it’s later revealed that the Kingpin was the one who ordered Maya’s father’s death. After learning the truth, Maya turns a gun on the Kingpin and shoots him. Because the shot happens off-camera, Kingpin’s death is never confirmed. There’s a chance Vincent D’Onofrio will return as the Kingpin at some point down the road, though his participation in Echo has not been reported.

Streaming exclusively on Disney+ in 2023, the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

Joining Alaqua Cox for Echo are Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, and Cody Lightning, with Graham Greene and Zahn McClarnon. To honor the character’s Native American heritage, Echo will be directed by Native filmmakers Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie.
