Top Gun: Maverick: First reactions celebrate an exciting throwback to high-flying action

The first reactions for Top Gun: Maverick are beginning to come in after its special screening at CinamaCon and while the review embargo has not quite lifted, the social media response is fair game and it looks like we will all be excited to feel the need for speed again.

The general reaction appears to be that the film is a lot of fun and heavy on the nostalgia from the first film but it makes for an exciting throwback to action films of the past. Tom Cruise is getting a lot of praise for his performance and the flight sequences are said to be out of this world and should be seen on the biggest screen possible. It’s also getting raves for being a surprisingly emotional experience as well. Top Gun: Maverick soars! While the story relies heavily on the original as well as nostalgia, the film serves as the ultimate 80s throwback and is such a genuine crowd pleaser. Per the film’s official synopsis, “After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” The film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer.

Believe it or not, Top Gun: Maverick was originally slated for release on July 12, 2019, but that date was delayed to “allow the production to work out all the complex fight sequences.” The film was then moved to June 26, 2020, and then bumped up two days to June 24, 2020. Due to the ongoing COVID-10 pandemic, the film was delayed again until December 23, 2020. That release date seemed like a lock but Paramount Pictures moved the film again to July 2, 2021, partially due to scheduling conflicts with Tom Cruise, as well as the rise of more COVID-19 cases. The film shifted dates again to November 19, 2021, but it was delayed one more time to its current date of May 27, 2022.
