HBO Max has reportedly drawn a summoning circle around Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù as the star of its new Constantine series. J.J. Abrams is spearheading the new series while also developing a Justice League Dark franchise for D.C. Entertainment, with several characters expected to appear in various projects. Attached to write the Constantine TV series is Guy Bolton, with Abrams serving as an executive producer.
Today’s casting report comes from The Illuminerdi, which claims that HBO Max is eyeing the British-Nigerian actor for the title role. Previously, Dìrísù has appeared in T.V. shows like Gangs of London, Humans, and The Halcyon. He’s also starred in films such as The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Silent Night, and the upcoming Mr. Malcolm’s List. Dìrísù is also an accomplished actor on the stage and has appeared in One Night in Miami performances and more.
Just because HBO Max could be considering Dìrísù for the part, it does not mean he will lead the series. In other words, we won’t know much until HBO Max issues an official report.
John Constantine is a British exorcist and occult detective who hunts the supernatural. The character has appeared in countless comics and been adapted for film and television. Keanu Reeves played Constantine in Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film, and Matt Ryan starred as the character for an Arrowverse series and D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow. Although he typically comes through in the end, Constantine is not to be trusted and is often the cause of more trouble than he’s worth. He’s been romantically involved with DC’s Zatanna Zatara, who never hesitates to put John in his place.
