The Northman Interview: Alexander Skarsgård

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to do something amazing – attend the London premiere of The Northman. Admittedly, I loved the movie. It has everything I enjoy in a good historical yarn, from the easily digestible revenge story to the beautifully staged carnage. It also contains a heavy dose of art courtesy of director Robert Eggers. It’s the perfect meshing of blockbuster and arthouse, and the key to it all is the commanding lead performance by Alexander Skarsgård, in a role he was seemingly born to play. Starring as the vengeful Amleth, whose father, the King (played by Ethan Hawke), is murdered. Years later, Amleth poses as a slave to take revenge against his dastardly uncle (Claes Bang), with help from a fellow slave (Anya Taylor-Joy). However, his quest turns out to be a lot less straightforward than he thinks, thanks to complicated feelings for his mother (Nicole Kidman), who’s married his uncle, and young half-brother. On my journey, I was given a chance to dig in with some extended interviews with Alexander Skarsgård and Robert Eggers during my Northman trip.

The first, with Skarsgard, lasts a solid fifteen minutes and is pretty interesting, with the likeable Skarsgard weighing in on everything from Norse mythology to classic Viking films and more. The interview starts with Skarsgard commenting on my axe throwing skills (or lack thereof) as he and Eggers surprised a few of us by showing up when we went axe throwing on our first night in London. Skarsgard struck me as a very nice guy, and I genuinely hope The Northman propels him further up the Hollywood A-list, as he made one hell of a good film here.
