Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is already exceeding expectations after one day in release. Now that the Friday numbers are in, it looks like the video game sequel is on track to open well beyond its box office tracking.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 grossed $26.5 million on Friday which is a figure that also includes the $6.25 million it made the day before in previews, per Deadline. As of now, the film is looking at a debut in the $67-69 million range this weekend which is well above the 3-day opening of the first film ($58 million). This also continues the hot streak for Paramount Pictures which has already been on a roll this year with Scream, Jackass Forever, and The Lost City all pulling in solid numbers.
Michael Bay’s Ambulance isn’t having the same luck as the Sonic sequel. The film grossed $2.8 million Friday and the movie will be lucky to clear $8 million for the weekend. I’m still scratching my head about this one because the film had a killer trailer, some of the best reviews Michael Bay has seen during his career and it’s catering to the male audience, which has been know to come out to the movies during the pandemic. Some are saying that the film, despite its director and cast, looks more suited for streaming, which could be why its underperforming so far. Ingredients were in place for this to do well but the changing moviegoing climate in the wake of the pandemic has certainly made it harder for films like Ambulance.
