After the success of Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder is returning to Netflix for Rebel Moon, an epic sci-fi fantasy movie that’s been assembling quite the cast over the past few months. THR has reported that the latest to join Rebel Moon are Corey Stoll and Cary Elwes.
Rebel Moon takes place on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy which finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Belisarius. The desperate colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand. Sofia Boutella will star as the mysterious young woman, with Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Ray Fisher, Rupert Friend, Stuart Martin, and more also rounding out the cast of Rebel Moon. THR has revealed that Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones) and Alfonso Herrera (Ozark) have also boarded the production. Cary Elwes is said to be playing the king of the galactic empire, but there are no details on who the other new additions will be playing.
Production on Rebel Moon will begin later this month and will last until November. The plan is to split the movie into two epic features, and much like Army of the Dead, there are several potential spinoffs in development should the film do well. Rebel Moon originally began life as a Star Wars pitch a decade ago but has been retooled as an original sci-fi universe. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder has previously said. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.” Zack Snyder will direct the film, and he also co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad.
