Spider-Man 4: Sam Raimi says anything is possible

After taking the helm of all three Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire, Sam Raimi was set to direct Spider-Man 4, but he left after expressing unhappiness with the script and doubt that he could successfully hit the release date Sony Pictures had already announced. The project wound up being scrapped entirely and the studio rebooted the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield.

As we know, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprised their roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland, and their appearance has generated a lot of interest in seeing Spider-Man 4 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 resurrected. While speaking with Fandango, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi was asked about the chances he might team up with Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4.

I’ve come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.

I suppose the multiverse has proven that anything really is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I’m not about to hold my breath for Spider-Man 4. Sam Raimi does seem willing to return to the MCU if asked. “Absolutely. It’s like the world’s best toy box to be able to play at Marvel,” Raimi said. “I’d love to come back and tell another tale, especially with the great management they’ve got there.” Would you like to see Sam Raimi direct a proper Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire or has that ship sailed?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
