A couple weeks ago, we shared the confirmation that Greg Nicotero, the FX artist / executive producer who has been directing most of the biggest episodes of The Walking Dead for the last several seasons, would indeed be directing the series finale. Filming on the series finale has now wrapped, and Nicotero took to social media (accompanied by series star Norman Reedus) to note the fact that The Walking Dead is finished filming.
The final season of The Walking Dead, which is season 11 of the show, has been split into three batches of eight episodes. The final eight episodes will air sometime later this year, and the series finale is expected to air before the end of 2022.
Before we get there, the last midseason finale is called God, and it will be available to watch on AMC+ as of April 3rd. It will air on AMC April 10th. Here’s the synopsis:
In the very last mid-season finale for The Walking Dead, our heroes are trapped in situations beyond their control. Everyone they’ve worked so hard to protect is at risk as danger baits them at every turn. All is at stake. Now, they must decide who and what are worth saving. Each decision comes with its own deadly ramifications.
Nicotero directed that midseason finale as well.
Wrapping production on The Walking Dead after twelve years of working on the show was clearly bittersweet for Nicotero and Reedus, but this isn’t the end of their journey through the zombie apocalypse. AMC has already announced that Reedus will continue playing his character Daryl on a spin-off series that will pair him with Melissa McBride’s Carol, another character who has been around since the first season. Nicotero will probably have a hand in that show as well.
